Hello to everyone in ECMP 355! My name is April, and I’m currently living in Yorkton, SK. I just completed my first year of studies in Elementary Education, and I’ll be moving to Regina this summer to continue school there. I grew up in a small town- my graduating class had 10 people- so I’m pretty nervous about moving to a big city. When I’m not busy with school or work, I’m usually struggling desperately to keep my apartment clean. Other than that, my hobbies include playing saxophone, spinning poi, and photography.
I’d like to think I’m pretty good with computers, but I’m no techno-geek. I get very frustrated with technology when it isn’t working properly (which seems to be most of the time for me), but I’m usually pretty resourceful and can find the answers I need to fix things. I’ve had several websites in the past, I enjoy making amateur graphics with PhotoShop, and my Powerpoint slideshows usually have way too much work put into them. I also went through a weird phase where I played a lot of World of Warcraft, so I am now fluent in gamer-speak (a useful life skill).
One of the benefits that technology can bring to a classroom is that it can provide a more interactive, engaging learning experience. Tools such as slideshows and the use of Smart Boards help stimulate visual learners. I have also been in a classroom with speakers set up around the room to amplify the teacher’s voice. This helped students who had hearing difficulties, and also seemed to hold the attention of all students more effectively. Computer games and activities can be used to help children learn in all subject areas, and also help develop children’s computer skills, which are becoming increasingly essential. Unfortunately, technology’s rapid expansion makes it difficult for schools to keep up, since funding is so limited. Although sites like Facebook and Youtube can be used for positive purposes, such as connecting with others and exchanging feedback, there is also potential for a lot of negative drama. People are not afraid to make hurtful comments over the internet, which they might not have made in person. Education might now need to focus more on online bullying than face-to-face bullying.
I’m not really sure what to expect from this class, but I’m sure that it will provide useful skills and knowledge that will help me in my career as an educator. I hope to learn about the emerging technologies which are being used in classrooms, and how they benefit learners. I also hope to learn how to use technology effectively with various age groups, learning styles, and ability levels. I’m looking forward to an interesting six weeks!

HI April!
Yorkton is cool – you have a wave pool.
I enjoyed your post – I am just curious about what SPINNING POI is?
Is it utterly ridiculous that I do not know that terminology?
I hope you like Regina when you finally move here – It’s not so much “big city” as it is the “little sister of a BIG city, who thinks she’s all grown up”…hope you are enjoying our class!

Thanks for this information, April. It sounds like you have a good start.
One thing to note: you mentioned a lot of things you could have linked to. Try making that a habit, it really helps the page become more interactive.
Hope you again blog soon.
Thanks.
